Eligible customers affected by the carrier’s 2024 price increases will receive a choice of benefits. The headline $38 million figure represents potential value, rather than a cash-refund fund.
Some T-Mobile customers in New York will receive relief following a settlement over price increases on plans previously marketed with price guarantees.
New York Attorney General Letitia James announced the agreement on October 20, 2026, describing potential consumer benefits worth more than $38 million. The state’s investigation concerned promises advertised between 2017 and 2019, followed by increases of approximately $5 per line in 2024.
The available benefits depend on account eligibility and whether customers leave or remain with T-Mobile. It is not an automatic payment to every subscriber in the state.
What eligible customers can receive
The attorney general’s announcement outlines these options:
| Customer group | If they cancel | If they stay |
|---|---|---|
| Affected customers identified as using 4G phones | Last month’s payment refunded, plus a $25 cash card | A qualifying 5G phone offered free, or a $150 credit towards a more expensive model, alongside plan-price protection |
| Other affected customers, including those who upgraded to 5G | Last month’s payment refunded | Plan-price protection |
These are alternative options, rather than benefits every customer receives together.
Who qualifies—and how long does price protection last?
The agreement defines covered accounts as New York-billed T-Mobile ONE accounts opened between January 1, 2017, and April 30, 2019, which remained on that plan when the 2024 increase occurred. Device information determines the benefit category.
For qualifying customers who remain on their current plan, the agreement protects the monthly recurring charge until no earlier than May 30, 2029. T-Mobile neither admits nor denies the attorney general’s findings.
That wording matters. Protection of a plan’s recurring service charge should not be interpreted as a promise that every possible item on a bill is frozen.
Customers should watch for an account-specific notice
The settlement requires initial notifications within 150 days of its October 20 effective date. Customers generally receive 45 days after notification to choose the relevant cancellation or device offer.
Notices go by email, with postal alternatives where necessary. Recipients of the alternative postal notice receive five additional days. A reminder must also appear on the first bill following notification.
The practical next step is to review the notice for the affected account. Customers should confirm their eligibility and deadline before cancelling in expectation of a refund.
Keep the notice, relevant bills and any written confirmation of the selected benefit. Those records can help resolve questions about what was offered and when a request was made.
What does the $38 million figure mean?
The estimate describes the potential combined value of customer options. It does not establish a $38 million pool of cash to be divided equally among subscribers.
The value to an individual household will therefore depend on its circumstances. A device offer may be useful to someone needing a replacement phone, while another customer may place more value on retaining a predictable plan charge.
Before choosing, compare the actual offer with your needs and the cost of any replacement service. A headline settlement total cannot tell an individual customer which option provides the best outcome.
